It’s not your bosses fault you didn’t get promoted, it’s yours.

One of the things that used to frustrate me the most was when I would hear an employee complain that their boss wasn’t developing them or tell them what was needed to be promoted.

Sure, the manager plays an important role but if you’re waiting for them to be your advocate, you could be waiting a long time.

The best advocate for developing and advancing is YOU.

Early in my career I got some really good advice that I still subscribe to to this day – you never know unless you ask. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve thought something wasn’t possible and it turns out it was – I was the one holding myself back.

The lesson I learned later on was it’s not just about asking/advocating – it’s also about knowing when the time is right.

I can think of a few occasions where I was all into advocating for myself and it just wasn’t the right time. Had I paid closer attention to what was going on around me, I would have recognized that and chosen a more appropriate time to advocate for myself.

So, my message to all of you out there waiting for the next opportunity to come or for someone to lay out a plan for you:

➡ You are your #1 advocate – never forget this is your job!
➡ Don’t be afraid to ask – you might be surprised by the answer.
➡ Don’t be afraid to say no – sometimes advocating for yourself means NOT doing something.
➡ Timing matters – don’t be oblivious to what’s going on around you.
