Leadership Lesson: Embracing the Power of Questions

A few years ago, as I stepped into a bigger leadership role, I encountered a situation that tested my ability to lead. A member of my team approached me with a challenge, seeking my guidance and expertise. As leaders, we often strive to have all the answers, but this time, I found myself at a loss. Instead of letting this feeling of helplessness consume me, I took a different approach – I asked questions.

Throughout my career, I had become skilled in technical work, and I took pride in my proficiency. However, as I embraced my new leadership responsibilities, I quickly realized that the technical aspects were no longer my domain. Others on my team were now handling those tasks, and honestly, they were doing it better than I ever could.

That pivotal moment taught me an important lesson about leadership – sometimes, it’s not about having all the answers, but rather, knowing the right questions to ask. In that moment of uncertainty, I turned to my team member and inquired about their thought process, their approach, and their ideas. To my surprise, they paused, pondered my questions, and responded with, “Hmm, I hadn’t thought about it that way. Thank you.”

Empowered by our conversation, they embarked on their own journey of problem-solving and found a great solution. It dawned on me that great leaders don’t necessarily hold all the knowledge; instead, they possess the ability to draw out the brilliance within their team.

Leadership is not about showcasing my knowledge or expertise; it’s about providing unwavering support and encouragement to my team members. It’s about fostering an environment where creativity and innovation thrive, allowing my employees to flourish in their own unique ways.

So, here’s to embracing the discomfort of not having all the answers, and instead, focusing on nurturing the potential within our teams. Let’s remember that asking the right questions can lead to extraordinary outcomes and unleash the best in those we lead.
