Standing Up – Even When It’s Hard

I was once told by a senior leader not to call out the unacceptable behavior of another leader because it would be bad for me.

I did it anyway.

But the senior leader was right – it cost me an important relationship and probably slowed my growth too.

It sucked, but it was the right thing to do.

I realized then that being a leader and standing up for what’s right can be a risky proposition. But it’s one of the most important things a leader can do.

Opportunities to stand up come in all different shapes and sizes.

▶Pushing back on unrealistic or manufactured deadlines that impact your people – and their families.
▶Calling people out when they interrupt, talk over, or sideline people in meetings.
▶Stopping bad behavior – even if that person is a star performer for your company.
▶Being vocal in support of people who are being treated poorly – or worse – in our communities.

This has been a recent topic for many of the leaders I am coaching. When a leader is struggling with this challenge, I work with them to block out the noise and get clarity on their values.

I’ve found when leaders are clear on their values, the answer is sitting right there in front of them. And what may have felt hard or risky now feels like an obvious thing to do.

True leadership is about embracing risks for a greater good….or simply because it’s the right thing to do.

Leaders emerge when they stand up, even in adversity.

Leadership means having the courage to take an action that isn’t popular.
