Three Tips to Find a Great Coach

Hi, my name is Andy Porter and I am a coach.

Right now your response is most likely one of the following:

“You mean you’re coaching a sports team? Which one?”

“That’s just a nice way to say you’re in between jobs”

“I hear you saying words, but I still have no idea what it is you actually do”

I did a quick LinkedIn search for executive coaches and it came back with about 75,000 results. I’m not exaggerating – it was a legit 75,000.

But even with so many people working as coaches, there is still not a widespread understanding of what coaches do and more importantly, how to find the really great coaches out there.

A great coach is someone who can help you solve a tough problem and become a stronger leader.

So how do you know?

I’ve been a buyer of coaching and a coach for many years. Here are 3 things to look for:

Great Coaches Have An Area of Focus

They’ve thought deeply about where they can be most impactful with their coaching skills

They can tell you in plain language who they coach and why they can help these people

They’ve invested the time in learning about their area of focus so they are knowledgeable about what’s going on in their client’s world

They never say

“I can coach anyone”

“I don’t need to know anything about your business/situation”

You Don’t Hear About The Coach’s “Process”

The client doesn’t care about the process

The client wants you to help them solve a hard problem

The coach can communicate to you in a clear way what problem they will help you solve and what it will look like for you when it’s solved

If the coach leads with their process, it’s more about them than you

They’ve Put Real Time into Learning Their Craft – Being a great coach requires a lot more than simply being a “people person.”

It involves getting formal training on different coaching approaches

It involves building up hundreds of hours of coaching real people

It involves having more experienced coaches listen to you coach and give you direct feedback

It involves having years of experience and credibility in your chosen area of coaching focus

It involves more than just changing your LinkedIn profile.
