Why won’t people listen to my ideas?

I’ve heard this from many of the leaders I’ve worked with and have coached.

And it’s frustrating, because in many instances, these people have great ideas that would really help their companies.

But they are ignored or worse, someone else says the same thing and that person gets the credit.

When I look across all the leaders I know who’ve struggled with getting their ideas heard, almost all of them made the same mistake. They forgot that work is first and foremost a relationship business!

They were so focused on the task that they forgot about the other human being in the conversation. And after a while, that approach tends to make people tune you out.

There is a very simple formula to get your ideas heard:

Every conversation has two outcomes – a task outcome and a relationship outcome – and to be influential, leaders need to pay attention to both in every conversation they have.

If I have a good relationship with you, I’m more likely to listen to you than I would if you’re only focused on the task.

So if you’re struggling with getting your ideas heard, take a hard look at how you’re interacting with people. You might find that you’re over indexing on the task at the expense of the relationship.
